A Conversation Inspired by a Caterpillar

Theresa Barosh
"Why do we need someone to teach us?"
"What do you mean? Rather than teaching ourselves?"
"Yeah. Why are we here, in college? Why don't we do this all day [observing something such as a caterpillar in order to learn about it]"
"We don't know what he eats or when he becomes a cocoon. We don't know anything about him or how to take care of him."
"No, but we can learn by observing him."
"We don't know what kind of caterpillar he is without a book or teacher or the internet..."
"Breeze thinks that he may be a Clouded Sulphur Caterpillar. Anyway, he's Charlie. what's in a name?"
"You can use a name to identify something. Or to talk to other people about something. If you wanted to talk to another person about Charlie wouldn't you want to be able to say the name of what you were talking about?"
"Or you wouldn't have to talk to other people about it because you could take time to figure it out on your own."
"Don't you think that sharing and comparing information is important?"

I LOVE this format of documenting! Who was the other person in this conversation, if you don't mind my asking?

Sean Fogerty- long curly hair and beard. He started it asking why we were here. (I may have taken some artistic liberties in my presentation, but that's pretty much what the conversation consisted of.)
