Compost

Last week I joined the compost club at Willamette. We discussed plans to cut down on waste around campus. Unfortunately, we can't compost the food at the dining hall because there is too much so we are just starting with the waste in the halls. We talked about the different methods of composting at Zena Farm and how we are going to use the compost to add nutrients to the soil and help the plants grow. The process of decomposing is fascinating and a crucial part in helping cut down on our impact on the earth. I love the cycle of composting and giving back to the earth because it gives us so much. I always think the cycle of decomposing in the forest is a beautiful and flawless cycle and learning more about this cycle in composting club has been very interesting and then trying to emanate it in our club. We are experimenting with a few different types of composting and one that will be particularly interesting will be mushroom composting. Mushrooms help break down substances while filtering out toxins and producing edible mushrooms! I think this will be an interesting experiment and I will continue blogging about the progress.
