Unusual trees

While I was hiking I came across two very remarkable trees. The one above had bright red bark like that of the coastal Madrona trees. Unlike the Madrona the bark was rough and doesn't peel. It was an evergreen, maybe a Western Hemlock, but I'm not positive.
The second was the size of a large shrub. It had strange growths of branches. The first time I saw it I thought it was a mutation of some kind but after a few minutes I saw another and another. Only one or two branch on each plant had this eruption of growth. The others appeared quite normal. Maybe the strange growth occurred when the plant got damaged, or when it had an access of some hormone, or maybe it was something else entirely.

Oh, thanks. My camera is really crappy but it still does the job.
